Tasting Notes

“The 2013 Hermitage Ex Voto is a great effort given the vintage. It shows all the classic elements of the appellation, from complex notes of leather, meat and spice to crushed stone and grilled plums. Already approachable, this medium to full-bodied wine shows silky tannins and crisp acids on the long finish.”

(aged in new oak for 40 months) Glass-staining ruby. Deep-pitched cassis, cherry liqueur, incense and candied violet scents, along with hints of olive paste and Moroccan spices. Sweet, broad and energetic on the palate, offering alluringly sweet black and blue fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors underscored by an intense mineral quality. Unfolds very slowly with air and finishes impressively long, featuring youthful tannins and outstanding energy.

90% Marsanne, 10% Roussanne. Loads of oak on the nose giving plentiful sweet spice. Doesn’t seem to have enough fruit ripeness to match on the palate, and there’s something of a flatness to the structure – smooth and balanced, certainly, but lacking liveliness. Perhaps needs age? (RH)
