Tasting Notes
Robert Parker 89
The 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape offers a terrific nose of spice box, cherry jam, pepper, and assorted berries. It is medium to full-bodied, with plenty of glycerin, moderately sweet tannin, a fat mid-palate, and a dense, thick, powerful finish. Already accessible, it promises to last for another 10-15 years. Represented by Russell Herman, Berkeley Heights, NJ; tel. (908) 771-9082, various American importers including Silenus Wines, Boston MA; V.O.S. Selections, New York, NY; Tropical Wines, Pompano Beach, FL; Import!, Madison, WI; and Elliott Bay Distributing, Seattle, WA.
Anticipated maturity: 2000-2015
Vinous 90
Medium red. Complex, terroir-driven aromas of roasted red fruits and humus. Fat, roasted, intensely flavored and a bit rustic in a positive way; classic superripe grenache, with a complicating note of dark chocolate. Tannins are thoroughly ripe.
