We are incredibly excited to launch our 2022 Burgundy En-Primeur Offer which features new releases from some of the region’s finest growers including a number of exciting new additions to our roster.

After a string of challenging vintages with extremely limited volumes, 2022 makes a refreshing change. In many respects, it is a dream vintage: seductive in style, healthy crop levels with consistently high quality across reds and whites supported by a return to price stability.

The 2022 vintage is a very encouraging one which demonstrates that Burgundy can retain its identity in the face of ever more extreme weather conditions. Officially, this was the warmest, driest and sunniest year on record since the start of the 20th century. However, well-timed rain in June and August ensured the wines retain remarkable freshness.

While the season began early and the threat of frost loomed once again in April, disaster was narrowly avoided. The frost didn’t quite materialise as expected: a few areas, including Chablis, suffered a little damage – but nothing of any great consequence. The subsequent warm and sunny conditions ensured a relatively straightforward season in the vines. Double the average amount of rain in June helped keep the vines going through the dry summer. Harvest began around the last week of August in the Côte de Beaune, with growers in the Côte de Nuits typically starting a week or so later.

Volumes are generally good. Most producers told us their yields came in within 10-15% of the permitted maximum, which for quality-focused growers is the benchmark. White-wine production is around the level of 2020. For reds, this is probably the largest crop since 2017. With a second successive good crop in the cellars for 2023, we have encountered plenty of smiling vignerons.

It is impossible to generalise, and we have not yet received all our allocations, but prices on the whole remain stable thanks to the security of two back-to-back vintages of good production levels. With the growers facing inflationary pressures on energy, dry goods and wages, this is very positive news.

It is difficult to think of a more complete vintage in the past decade or more.

The red wines are juicy and charming with creamy red-berry fruit, bright acidity and sweet tannins. Though the wines’ forward fruit and supple texture make them very appealing even at this youthful stage, their exceptional balance should make this a vintage with true ageing potential. It is difficult to think of a more complete vintage in the past decade or more. The white wines are also very harmonious, with a consistently high level of quality across the board. From Chablis to the Mâconnais, this is an excellent Chardonnay (and Aligoté) vintage that follows in the footsteps of 2017 and 2020.

Overall, 2022 is a vintage where the identities of each village and the various quality levels are faithfully respected. Availability at the top end for the most lauded Premiers and Grands Crus will remain very restricted. There is good value to be found, however, in village-level wines, which are benefiting both from recent warmer summers and greater attention to detail from the growers. Alcohol levels rarely exceed 13.5% and there is a real feeling of Burgundian restraint. You can buy with confidence, no matter your taste preference or budget – there really is something for everybody.

Some cuvees will be allocated to customers placing balanced orders of wines and who support us throughout the year. A number of growers have yet to release their allocations and prices, we request you make an expression of interest, and we will confirm the details as soon as we have them.
